This morning one of our foxy neighbors was meandering back and forth across the frozen pond. I’m not sure where the second fox was. Hopefully asleep somewhere.

Speaking of all things nature…I’ve been reading Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder by Richard Louv. I spotted the book a year or so ago in the giftshop at the zoo and was intrigued. As a child who grew up in nature – fishing, camping, making mud pies – I was intrigued and saddened by the idea. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who works with children or is a parent or even just someone who loves nature and realizes its importance.

Louv points out studies that show the calming affect of the great outdoors and even its theraputic uses (ADHD). I’m definitely not against technology – video games, computers, cell phones, etc – but there is a balance that needs to be reached that is sadly skewed. Louv also talks about the difference between organized outdoor time, such as sports, versus unstructured outdoor play. And the often overlooked importance of the latter.

…so if it wasn’t 15 degrees outside perhaps I would take a hike…
